In media class, we were set to create a short video, consisting of multiple clips from different movies/tv shows/videos, which show how a group or race is protrayed and represented in media.
For my video, I decided to showcase how homosexuals are represented in media. I chose this because there is always a very distinct and recognizable stereotype for gays in media. Common traits include "fashionable" personality, soft voice, flamboyant appearance etc.

Apple's Marketing
http://www.businessweek.com/technology/content/aug2007/tc20070815_636359.htm
In this article, Apple's successful marketing techniques and campaigns to teens was analysed, and in four simple points, the secrets behind its marketing success were broken down.
Let's take point #3, for example:
Perhaps due to the simplicity and elegance of Apple's advertisments, they are very rapidly spread on the Internet, and in many cases, become viral. They are also easy targets for parodies, and because of this, many parodies and video responces have been created, directed towards these commercials, which speeding up and enhancing the process of spreading through the Internet.

3. Let fans and the media do your marketingThe author of the article states here that whenever there was a big popularity boom, or a large amount of media attention for Apple, they would immediately scale back on the marketing. In fact, Apple had never been too big on advertising, relying a lot on word-of-mouth and communication (Two-step flow and cultivation). In its advertising, Apple would keep everything simple and clean, and will "never overloads ads with information."

Media Studies - Advertisement Examples
In a recent Media Studies lesson, we went through advertisements and what makes them effective. Here are two examples which I believe work particularly well:
This "Old Spice" commercial went viral on the Internet recently. In fact, the makers of these advertisements did a long, 24/7 campaign, where some comments users post on Youtube, Twitter, Yahoo etc. were promptly replied by a short, unique video made just for that user.
This one replies primarily on humour, and I feel it sarcastically demonstrates a situation where the product advertised would come in handy.
Each member of the group came up with a list of ten points in which we believe an effective advertisement should have. This was my list:
Effective adverts:
• Humour
• Eye-catching
• Holds one’s attention
• Leaves a long lasting impression
• “Viral” among Internet users
• Recognizable and unique
• Contains recognizable material, or material most would be able to relate to (eg. Songs, pictures, parody etc.)
• Situation in which most would be able to relate to
• Easy to understand
• Short and to the point
Our ideas were then compiled into a list of "Top 10" characteristics in which a good commercial should have:
Top 10:
• Engage the audience
• Relate to the audience
• Dynamic
• Recognizable element
• Eye-catching material
• Leaves an impression
• Short and sweet
• “Viral” on the Internet
• Unique
• Humorous
Until next time!
